A New Way to Celebrate
Harvesting 940 lbs of Fruit for Local Charities
The first Labor Day celebration took place Tuesday, September 5th, 1882 in New York City. Since then, every year on this date we have celebrated the social and economic achievements of the American people. And what better way to celebrate this holiday than to give back to our community. SkyBound partnered with the OC Food Access Coalition to harvest fruit that would be donated to various organizations around SoCal. The unique aspect of this organization is that they harvest fruit from locals living in the area, thus reducing overall food waste within the community. OCFAC's mission is to "create access to healthy, local food options for Orange County’s most nutritionally vulnerable residents". We met early Sunday morning in the hills of La Habra. Four long, yet rewarding hours later, 940 lbs of fresh oranges were ready to go. Packing Lindsey's car to the brim (think life-sized Tetris), she was off to deliver our hard work to surrounding organizations. We received this letter from her the next day, letting us know exactly where our fruit went and how many people it fed.
SkyBound is genuinely committed to actively serving the community in various ways. If you know an organization that would be perfect for us, please- let us know!
The OC Food Access Coalition was founded in 2010. They work to fill in the service and resource gaps that prevent access to healthy foods. They aim to implement long term solutions to hunger through group harvests, community research, and waste management solutions.
